Point of Interest
A practical lesson of drilling a hole with a bench drilling machine. After learning how to use a bench drilling machine, the students will drill a hole in a board while using the nearby computer to refer to the correct usage.

Unit
How to Use Industrial Tools and Machines Safely
Contents: based on curriculum guidelines
Content A
(3) Instruct the following on how to use industrial tools and machines and their processing technology.
(a) Learn processing methods best suited for each material
(b) Learn to properly use tools and machines for processing, assembling and finishing industrial parts.
(4) Instruct the following about the mechanism and maintenance of the machines that would be used for craftwork.
(a) Learn the basic mechanism of the machines.
(b) Be able to maintain the machines and to prevent accidents.

Teaching Objectives
To be able to process workpieces using tools or machines.

Lesson Plan
(1) Explain why a pilot hole needs to be drilled in the material and have the students think about the size and depth of the pilot hole.
(2) Have the students observe how to drill a hole safely with various tools and machines. (Give an actual demonstration using a borer and a bench drilling machine to explain their functions)
(3) Explain and show how students can repeatedly refer to the computer on how to use a bench drilling machine.

[Abstract]
The students are using the personal computer placed beside the tool as an operating manual.

(4) Have the students drill a pilot hole in a practice board with a borer and bench drilling machine while referring to the computer.
(5) Have the students choose an appropriate tool or machine to drill a pilot hole in their own materials.

Preparation/Consideration
Although students can refer to the PC on how to use a bench drilling machine, actual use of the machine can be dangerous and therefore, should be used under the teacher’s supervision.
