Watch Kyogen video clips to appreciate the traditional rhythm of classical Japanese, the high quality of Japanese classics, and the comedic aspect of Kyogen.

Lesson Plan
(1) Watch and listen to the three levels of laughs provided under the heading “Noh and Kyogen” found in the Education Video Material Collection site digitally developed by Information-technology Promotion Agency (IPA). Appreciate the different levels of laughs that Kyogen, with its stylized movements, has to offer.

(2) Discuss the differences in volume, intonation, and movement of the three laughs - “a big laugh” “a medium laugh” “a small laugh.”
(3) Personalize the experience by having the students act out the three different laughs, paying special attention to its differences.
(4) Watch and listen to other expressions that Kyogen has to offer.
(5) Study the Kyogen script “Torikabuto(monkshood)” in the textbook.

Preparation/Consideration
(1) The site offers not only materials on Noh and Kyogen, but also video materials on a variety of topics. The site can be projected on a large screen during the classes, and the students have the opportunity to go to the site during break time and after school.
(2) If errors occur when trying to access the video through the site, it is recommended that the material be downloaded into the computer in advance.
