Using a projector to show VOD (Video-On-Demand), the students learn how animals and plants change as the weather cools, as well as the points of observation for studying the surrounding natural environment, prior to the actual observation and research. The results will be printed
into a class newspaper, featuring the changes that occur when the weather
cools. |
Living Things and
the Seasons (After the Weather Cools)
Contents: based on MEXT’s curriculum
guidelines
4th Grade Content A Living Organisms and the
Surrounding Environment
(1) |
A Observe
the difference in animals in warm and cold weather. |
B Observe
the difference in plant growth in warm and cold weather |
|
(1) |
Become
aware of the changes in animals' activity and plant growth as the weather
cools. Notice the change from summer, as the tree leaves change color,
as they bear fruit and the different types of insects observed. |
(1) |
Reflect
on what nature was like in September, and project on the screen the freeze-framed
digital contents of the growth record of loofah to confirm the change
in season.
|
(2) |
Discuss and predict what kind
of changes occur in nature as winter approaches. |
(3) |
Using a projector, watch the digital
content "As the Weather Cools" (video clip) and study the changes in nature as winter approaches.
|
(4) |
The students shall present their
research results and predict the changes in nature after one month. |
(5) |
Look for objects within the school
grounds that will provide hints of the approaching winter.
|
(6) |
Write down the observation results,
organize the plant samples and use the library reference and the Internet,
and summarize the changes in nature to be featured in the class newspaper.
*Use of library reference material and computers. |
(1) |
The introductory
contents are downloaded from Gakken’s Video-On-Demand Educational Movie
Library. Both freeze-framed pictures and video clips are available for
science topics, making it easy for teachers to present the lesson. |
(2) |
After observation, it is possible
to broaden the scope of the research study by not only using library reference
material but also searching the Internet for websites that feature nature
in autumn. |
