Point of Interest
You can watch a video clip of an exemplary vault over a vaulting box.
The linear body drawing in the video clip allows the students to accurately observe the shifts in body movement during the vault.

Unit
Vaulting Box

5th and 6th Grade Contents B Gymnastics
(1)
B Vaulting the Vaulting Box. Supporting the body weight with the hands and completing the vault.

Teaching Objectives
(1) Vault over the vaulting box at the height suited for each student and to try new heights.
(2) Compare one's vault to the demonstration and determine the weaknesses.
(3) Choose the appropriate practice menu on how to improve and perfect the vault.

Lesson Plan
(1) The students shall vault the vaulting box at the height suited to their athletic abilities.
a. Vault the vaulting box in different ways and at different heights.
b. Attempt to vault the vaulting box in a different move or at higher heights.
(2) The students shall watch the demonstration.
a. Watch the demonstration on the computer screen (under "Brush your Skills") and notice what makes up a good vault and compare that to one's own vault.

b. Vault in front of the video camera preset to replay the vault onto the screen after a few seconds. Examine the vault on the screen and identify one's weak points.
(3) The students shall choose a practice menu especially designed to overcome his/her specific weakness and perfect the vault.
a. Choose the appropriate practice menu based on his/her weaknesses and practice accordingly.

Preparation/Consideration
(1)

There are two major ways to vault the vaulting box. One way is to land on the vault with the hands and shift the body weight, at the same time, spreading the legs in a V-shape, for example, to complete the vault. The second way is a rotation vault, where you perform a forward roll, for example, on the vaulting box. The first type can be broken down into two jumps; the first jump, from the running start to the landing of the hands onto the vaulting box, and the second jump, from the landing of the hands to the completion of the vault. The rotation vault involves landing on the vaulting box with the hands while maintaining the speed of the running start of the first jump and performing the forward roll on the vaulting box. The students will find it easier to understand the techniques involved if these vaults are visually explained using photographs and cards showing the step-by-step process.

(2) Videotaping each students' vault and breaking them down into sequential photographs or freeze-framing them, enables the students to effectively identify their weakness.
