Point of Interest
A practical example of getting students to realize the relationship between living things and their growth environment by instructing them to summarize their data taken with a digital camera onto a blank map drawn on the electronic whiteboard.

Unit
Observe Living things in the School Grounds and the Surrounding Area
Contents: based on curriculum guidelines
(1) Plant Life and Species
A Plant Observation

Teaching Objectives
To discover that a variety of plants grow in different environments by observing the plants in the school ground and the surrounding area.

Lesson Plan
(1) The teacher presents data taken with a digital camera and explains the task and the observation method.

[Abstract]
Students, working in groups, observe plants growing in or near the school. They use a digital camera to take pictures of the plants from various appropriate angles.

(3) The teacher downloads the data in the digital camera taken by the students into a PC.

[Abstract]
Paste the pictures onto the electronic whiteboard and study about plant environment and growth.

(5) To get the students to realize that the growth of dandelions and houttuynia cordatas depend upon their growth environments (in the sun or in the shade).

Preparation/Consideration
When taken with a digital camera, plants should be shot both up close and from a little distance away. Using these two techniques, students will be able to confirm the type of the plant and the environment in which it survives.
